verview DuPont herbicides like Glean® and Accent® belong to a family of crop protection chemicals known as sulfonylureas, which kill weeds by inhibiting a plant enzyme necessary for their growth. DuPont chemist Conrad Hoffman discovered the basic mechanism of ureas on plant enzymes in the 1950s, and another DuPont researcher, George Levitt, discovered the potent sulfonylureas in 1975. DuPont first marketed a sulfonylurea herbicide, Glean®, to wheat farmers in 1982. Sulfonylureas have since been developed for every major food crop in the world. |
