In 1938 DuPont introduced Butacite® , a petrochemical-based, polyvinyl
butyral (PVB) plastic for use as an interlayer in safety glass. Butacite®
sales grew rapidly because automobile manufacturers were delighted to
have a windshield that would retain its strength even in extreme cold,
a quality that earlier products had lacked. By the late 1950s, safety
glass manufacturers also were exploring non-automotive uses for Butacite® ,
such as building windows.
