Overview The Carney's Point, New Jersey, plant was established as a result of DuPont's diversification into the smokeless powder business. Francis G. and Pierre du Pont spent two years developing an effective product at a small laboratory on the site across the Delaware River from Wilmington. The site, comprised of 198 acres of wetlands, was ideal for a plant since the marshes provided natural firebreaks. Operations began in the summer of 1892 and by year's end the plant had produced 100,000 pounds of smokeless sporting powder and munitions. |
