One component, levdopa, replaces dopamine, a natural neurotransmitter that victims of the disease lack. The second component makes the product more effective by delaying the conversion of levdopa into dopamine until the drug passes into the brain. The product was greatly improved in 1991 when DuPont Merck Pharmaceutical Company received FDA approval to market Sinemet® /CR, a continuous release version in which the drug is suspended in a polymeric matrix that erodes slowly. Still marketed in both its new and older forms, the product remains the leading treatment for Parkinsons Disease. < Back one page or click on the timeline to continue your journey. |
