Overview

Comforel® products that used DuPont™ Dacron® polyester fibers included pillows, comforters, mattresses and mattress pads. Those products reflected DuPont's long experience in using science to improve on nature with synthetic fibers such as rayon in the 1920s, followed by nylon, Dacron® and Orlon®. Comforel® pillows and other items that provided the comfort of natural goose down, but could be machine-washed and were hypoallergenic. DuPont's line of sleep products originated as an offshoot of Dacron® production and had expanded, occupying a portion of its staple fiber operations in North and South Carolina, as well as in Monterrey, Mexico, and Uentrop, Germany.

DuPont faced an uphill battle to convince customers that Comforel® sleep products were an improvement over natural goose down, and focused its efforts on their comfort and health features. Special hollow-fiber technology provides extra puffiness to pillows, while slickened fibers reduce friction. The combination of puffiness and slickness makes for soft pillows and comforters with the smooth feel of goose down. Comforel® was sold in several different styles, including "Ultra", "Assurance" and "Eloquence". "Assurance" pillows include an Aller-Barr® dust mite barrier and Allerban® fiberfill, that helped slow the growth of bacteria, mold and fungus.

The Comforel® and Dacron® trademarks and their products were divested as part of the INVISTA™ separation in April, 2004.
